Emerging experimental-pop artist CHILD unleashes manifesto to America — Black Panda PR Press Release →
Emerging experimental-pop artist unleashes manifesto to America that’s as hopeful as it is incendiary...And as complex as the state of Western culture itself.
No artist wants to be put in a box. A rare few, try as they might, simply cannot be put in a box. In fact, there should be a reward for whoever manages to find one for Devin Coogan (aka CHILD), whose blended sonic delivery of indie-electronic, neo-soul, with a touch of industrial rock paints a not-unrealistic scenario of The Weeknd and Trent Reznor soundtracking Christopher Nolan films.
Debuting in August 2020, CHILD quickly amassed hundreds of thousands of listeners internationally with his cinematic, indie-pop power ballad “The Encounter,” which has garnered nearly 600K organic streams entirely independently via boutique label AESTHETYK.
Born in New England, the now-Atlanta resident spent most of the past year traveling the United States coast-to-coast in his Airstream as a means to deliberately press against the borderlands of “current”—by way of both art and altruism.
The heartbeat behind CHILD’s latest single, “Say It”—not only prompted the cross-country travels, but was stirred and solidified even more intensely once he set out on his journey—gleaning a deeper insight within the country that’s raised him.
“Say It”—releasing today on all major digital platforms—is accompanied by the sensory-compelling and equally-epic music video created by accomplished director/filmmaker Josh Etheridge, in collaboration with Coogan as co-producer. Inspired by film makers like Nolan, Coogan sought to visually inject correlations from the lyrical heart of “Say It.”
“Recently, I’ve carried a burden for what America is becoming,” says Coogan. “Silencing alternative opinions; demonizing convictions; driving a society with fear. It made me wonder if anyone else sees what’s wrong with all of this. Sure enough, I found I wasn’t alone."
“Throughout history we’ve convinced ourselves we were progressing forward; in hindsight, we've actually moved in reverse. This is my way of expressing that the seemingly right direction might, in fact, be the wrong one--and we need to move the other way, do a 180-turn as a society.”
“It’s dramatic, yet true: free-will is under attack. The distinction of choosing; thinking; suggesting additional perspectives. This is the point of rock 'n' roll: Not anarchy. Not anti-government, but accountability. I hope this song imparts courage, as much as it presses on the motives & intentions of our messages in the West. I’m not even asking everyone to agree—that's the beauty of it! Our ability to live out unique perspectives is a gift as well as a contribution to our world. We can all decide for ourselves! At least for now. So…say it.”
“Grips you into a tearing shimmer of expectations and the future.”
