Tedious & Brief, the indie alt-pop artist whose real name is Jamie Jacobsen, is releasing her newest single, “Not That Deep.”
“Not That Deep” officially dropped on September 17.
On “Not That Deep,” Jacobsen does go deep…into a break-up story that’s not even her own.
“My husband came to me with the opening lyrics of the song,” shares Jacobsen.
“He’s a studio drummer and every session he played that week was for songs touching on the subject of a person who broke the writer’s heart. He thought to himself, ‘What does it look like once you’re done grieving and you’re ready to move on? You’ll look back at your catalog of music and realize you’ve been writing about the same person and now you’re sick of giving them that attention, So that’s what we wrote about. ‘Not That Deep’ comes from the perspective of a person who’s done thinking about that passive tweet; who’s ready to burn the shirt they were bought, who’s over writing songs about their heartache, and—most of all—is done letting someone else have power over them.”

If you’re wondering where her stage name comes from, look no further than the wildly popular podcast “S-Town,” created by This American Life.
“It’s one of my favorite true stories I’ve ever heard,” explains Jacobsen.
“It’s a wild story about a guy named John B. McLemore who lives in what he calls “Shit Town Alabama.” John is many things, one being a clockmaker. On the backs of the clocks, he writes sayings about time and on one clock he wrote “Tedious & Brief.” I really love the sentiment of time/life being tedious and brief. Some people think that's a negative way to view life, but I think viewing things as tedious and brief challenges us to count every moment in life as precious and worthwhile, even the bad parts. It makes me want to live life intentionally because we’re only here for a few moments.”
